Creative Pick: Gaia Lanfranchi, Brand New Font Insigne
We got the first hand look at the craftsmanship from Creative Pick Gaia Lanfranchi, that goes into creating the brand new font Insigne, which is elaborately and carefully designed to reflect on the impact of modern cities to urban typography.
“In Italy, sign painting is still largely handcrafted by unknown artisans that pass down their knowledge from one generation to another. Starting from the exploration of cities familiar to the authors of the book (Genova, Faenza, Vicenza, Palermo, Torino and Bologna), the aim of the project is to develop a critical reflection about this craftmanship and the possible relations to the modern practice of visual design. In order to invite designers to take more in consideration urban typography as a valid resource of visual inspiration and critical advices for the design process, the team also designed a brand new font, named Insigne, based on the interpretation of various letters from the signs documented during the research: each character of the font is made merging two glyphs from two different cities.” Gaia Lanfranchi
